Minimalism: In Life and Art

March 22, 2019

What are your thoughts on minimalism?  I have been intrigued by it for quite some time.  Up until a few years ago, I never understood it.

It changed a few years ago when I was at work (at the TV station) and a couple of guys stopped by to promote a recent book they had published about the minimalism and how they got started in it.  I was fascinated by their story and wanted to give it a try.

I am still not living a minimalist lifestyle, but I am slowly working my way there - as in, I am getting rid of stuff i no longer need or use, and I don't buy things unless I need them.  I find it a little difficult to do while being and artist because I have art supplies and artwork all over the house, and even in a storage unit.  Eventually, I would like to have a large enough art studio to house all of my supplies and finished art pieces so that I can have more of a minimalist life outside of the art.

As far as minimalism in my art, I have just recently started creating more minimalist artworks.  Actually, they probably fall under the postminimalism category more than minimalism.  I am actually enjoying the creation of these pieces and the way they look when finished.  Most of my art in the past has been quite busy. I liked to have the viewer's eyes move all over the artwork.  Before, people would have to view the art for a short time just to see everything that was involved within.  Now, I feel that a lot of my minimalist pieces will make a person stop and relax for a short time.

Technology has made most of the world a fast-paced place to live.  Maybe some minimalist art can help us slow down a bit and respect a little bit of relaxation some more.

By the way, the guys I mentioned at the beginning of this post are named Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus. Together, they refer to themselves as, "The Minimalists."  They now have a few books published, have a popular documentary on Netflix called, "Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things", and they have a popular podcast.  If you want to research more on the minimalist lifestyle, I think the documentary would be a good place to start.  There are plenty of other people that talk about minimalism in podcasts and on YouTube that you can also look into.  Enjoy!

Have a great and artful day!
